Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Patients With Type 1 Diabetes Using Insulin Injections

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has been demonstrated in randomized trials to improve glucose control in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) (1–3); however, most of the participants in these trials have used a pump for insulin delivery, and the use of CGM in T1D patients receiving insulin by injection has not been well studied. We used the T1D Exchange registry database to assess the impact...

Clinical Use of Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Pediatrics

The first reported clinical use of a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system in children was by CossBuet al. in 1999. They investigated a bedside VIA 1-01G Blood Chemistry monitor for measuring glucose in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The monitor was programmed to draw venous blood, analyze, and record blood glucose samples automatically at predetermined intervals. This system wa...

Current Application of Continuous Glucose Monitoring in the Treatment of Diabetes

The ultimate goal of diabetes technology is to create an artificial pancreas, or closed-loop system. In the early 1970s, the first prototypes became available (1). Although recent advances are promising, the closed-loop system is currently confined to the clinical research center (2). The continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) pump became commercially available in the 1980s, and it is ...

Reduction in hemoglobin A1C with real-time continuous glucose monitoring: results from a 12-week observational study.

BACKGROUND Real-time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) was studied in 140 adults with diabetes over a 12-week period of home use. Hemoglobin A(1c)(HbA1c) was measured on day 1 (baseline) and at weeks 6 and 12. METHODS On day 1, participants received the CGM device (STS(R) System, DexCom, Inc., San Diego, CA) and underwent training on proper use. Insertion of the first sensor was performed u...
